There is no "sound card" in the iMac, per se; there are pretty much 
no cards in there for anything. It's all on the logic board.

The newer-ish iMacs (let's say, slot loading iMacs (late 1999) and 
newer) do sound fairly well. You're a tad limited on the types of 
input you can do, but that can be overcome with USB audio devices.

That said, I know lots of people who import sound to their iMacs from 
MD recorders. They all say it works fine, and that they get excellent 
results.
