Pogue is talking about how OS X has not been optimized to take advantage of
certain older ATI graphics cards that were pre-installed in the older iMacs,
iBooks and some other G3 models. See KnowledgeBase Article #106154 for the
specific models.

Originally, Apple said OS X would be fully supported by these graphics
cards, but it took much longer to arrive than they anticipated. After all
that time, new graphics cards were being used, so they decided to just
forget about the oldest ones.

Of course, a lot of people who bought those Macs with the promise they could
run X just fine are not happy about that and have filed a lawsuit. See this
article at MacCentral for the latest:
http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0204/18.g3suit.php

The lawsuit may change Apple's mind. Previously the KnowledgeBase article
said there were no plans to further support those graphics chipsets, but
yesterday it was changed to say that further plans were being investigated.
