I would run a hardware diagnostic before I bothered messing with
the software.  Then I'd reformat the disk (whatever they call
it in the Mac world) and reinstall (assuming there were no
hardware problems).  It doesn't take too long to install OS 9.
Then, if it keeps bombing, I'd send it in for service.  It
should run fine under OS 9 or OS X.  Only after it demonstrated
that it ran fine in OS 9 would I load OS X, because otherwise
you might just be ignoring a hardware problem that could affect
something you *did* want to do later on.

When I tried installing OS X, it complained that OS 9 wasn't there
already and refused to install.  I think you need to have it.  Some
suprising things only run in the emulator anyway, so I'd have it
laying around even if you think you won't use it....
