DiskWarrior is a good utility, in my opinion. It can fix problems that Norton Disk Doctor cannot. That's probably what solved your problems.
If you don't already own a copy of OS 9.0 or 9.1 you can't buy one. The one Apple sells now is 9.2.1, which is included in the OS X box only. Although, it may have been replaced by 9.2.2 by now. And yes, OS 9 uses a lot more memory than 8.6. You should definitely have at least 96MB of RAM, and hopefully more.
