Well, truth be told, when I sold my RevB iMac to my friend, I reformatted the hard drive and I used the install CDs that came with my Flat Panel iMac to restore OS X and the basic software. I figured that would prevent me from having to install all the upgrades since 10.0.3 (that's the version that was out when I first upgraded the old machine). Using the Flat Panel iMac's discs let me install the latest version of OS X on the RevB in one fell swoop. I only had to install two minor updates after installation. If I had installed from the ORIGINAL CD, however, I would have had to install the update to 10.1 first, then do all the updates until 10.1.4 (the current version at the time the machine was sold). That would have been a LOT of work. So I figured I'd just use the Flat Panel iMac's CDs to save me some steps. I didn't see this as cheating, but only as a time saver. After all, the copy of OS X on the old iMac WAS a legal one, and I was giving those discs to my friend as part of the purchase of the computer. So why not? The end result is the same. Interesting footnote: my friend had never owned a modern computer before (the latest computer he EVER owned was an old 386, and he hardly ever used it), so he wasn't saddled with any old Classic applications that he was "used to." He was starting absolutely fresh, so I figured there was no point installing OS 9 on his system AT ALL. He's running OS X exclusively on a RevB. He finds the OS X performance on the RevB to be more than adequate for his needs. In fact, my friend's RevB iMac is probably the ONLY RevB out there that has ONLY OS X installed. Actually, it's probably one of very few Macs PERIOD that don't have Classic installed with OS X. I would probably abandon OS 9 entirely myself, except for one small thing: Starfleet Academy. I love that game, and it's OS 9 native. So I keep a small 1 Gig OS 9 partition on my drive exclusively for running Starfleet Academy. I use it for nothing else whatsoever. John A.
