You've got a few interesting things here. I have some suggestions, comments
and questions. You didn't mention which machine you have. And you also didn't
mention when you last did an OS update prior to going to 9.2.2. You might
want to check to make certain you have the latest firmware update for your
machine. You can find this on Apple's site, where the software downloads are
located. Also make certain you have the latest Firewire extensions, including
the authoring extension. From what you described, it sounds like your system
is recognizing the Sony unit, but as a CDROM drive, not as a burner. When you
are using the Disc Burner application that is part of the OS, this is what
you should experience when you load a CD for burning: when you put in a blank
CD, you'll get a system messsage asking if you want to prepare the CD for
burning. You'd then give the CD a name, at which time it will appear on the
desktop. Then you can drag over files to copy. Then you would drag the CD to
the trash, as if ejecting. This automatically activates the burning process,
finishes the disk, and then ejects it. You obviously did not experience this.

The most important thing to check is whether the Mac OS supports your
particular CDRW, because it does not necessarily support all third party
drives. From an earlier post of yours, I surmise you have the Sony CRX1750L.
Assuming that this is using a Sony mechanism inside, I did not see your model
listed under the supported drives. The easiest place to find that list is to
look under iTunes, since iTunes by default uses Disc Burner
(www.apple.com/itunes/compatibility). You may need to get a different CDRW
drive OR to get Toast, with which you'll have a better shot at the drive
being supported. If you do get Toast, depending on which version you get, you
may have to disable some of Apple's FireWire extensions so that Toast's
extensions will work (there have been some documented conflicts).

<< Hello. The software that came with my firewire Sony CD-R/RW didn't seem to
work. Several of you replied to my post, telling me that the packaged
software doesn't always work, and to go buy Toast. I went to CompUSA Sunday
afternoon to do so. Perhaps because of the 10.2 roll-out, a
factory-authorized rep was there. He suggested I upgrade to 9.2.2 (I was on
9.1) and that I should be able to burn CD's without additional software. I
upgraded to 9.2.1, then 9.2.2. This did add the "burn CD" option under
"Special" but it was unselectable. When I put a blank CD in the CD-R/RW
drive, its icon appeared on my desktop. Then I dragged the contents of a
folder onto the CD-R icon, just as the rep had explained. When I
double-clicked the icon, it opened that folder and I was able to then click
the "burn CD" option. After just a moment, a dialogue box told me that "the
burn operation could not be completed because the devise is not supported."

I've hunted around Apple's and Sony's sites. What do I need to get this
going?
