My iMac has a nonworking CD drive. I've been using an external CD burner instead, with few problems. (a LaCie USB)
However, when I try to install X, first it told me it couldn't start up the computer from this drive. After messing around with Silverlining Pro, I did get it to boot from the Jaguar cd. However, I was greeted by a gray apple on white, and a little twirling ring, but after a few minutes, the apple turned into a little "no" icon (circle with slash) which stayed a long time. I finally had to turn off power to the iMac, turn off the disc drive, and turn on the computer (blinking ? followed by my standard 9.1). Anyone have a clue if there is a way for me to install X from an external CD drive? I hope I'm coherent enough to make sense, as I'm quite upset :-( . -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
