I think this is usually because faster drives generate more heat.  But you
have it kind of backwards, the early iMacs had cooling fans, and so should
be better suited to hotter hard drives.  The later fanless iMacs might have
more of a problem with heat buildup.

In any case, I think that people on this list have had success putting 7200
RPM drives in all types of iMacs.  I DEFINATELY know that people have put
them in the early iMacs with fans, but I'm not sure about the fanless iMacs.
