Trent,
Are you using iTunes 3? This would explain why your filenames are
getting changed. The program will automatically and rename mp3s based
on their ID3 tags. To stop it from doing this in the future, simply
open the app, then it's the iTunes Menu:Preferences, click the
"Advanced" tab and there should be a little check box next to "Keep
iTunes Music Folder Organized." Uncheck this and you should no longer
have problems with changing file names. I guess I don't know what you
mean by "balance" control, so I really can't comment on that.
I haven't run into the other problems you describe, after using iTunes
exclusively ever since it first came out, but most of my playlists are
short-term. (i.e. I throw them together, burn a CD and get rid of
them.) As far as burn speed goes, I have never noticed a lag, so I
don't know any solutions to speed problems. (Of course, slow to me and
slow to you probably mean totally different things.) I guess it takes
about 8-10 minutes to burn a 80 minute CD on my G4 iMac with a
Superdrive. This seems about normal to me.
