Actually, the need for virus protection depends on the individual and the
type of work being done. Personally, I have clients that are primarily
running under windows, and I receive word processing files from them all the
time. The only times I have ever personally experienced viruses on my system
have been from such wp files received from clients. So although rare, it is
not impossible to "catch" a virus. Previously, I had been using Norton
Antivirus. But now, any Mac user who subscribes to .Mac (the successor to
iTools), will automatically get McAfee's virus protection software as part of
the subscription.

I disagree with your friend. I've owned a Macintosh computer for almost
four years and, in all that time, I've NEVER had virus scanning software
installed. Not once. Never needed it. Classic Macintosh viruses are
extremely rare, and viruses for Mac OS X are virtually non-existent.

IMHO, virus protection software is VITAL on Windows, since Windows has
so many back doors that can be exploited even during simple web
browsing. A Macintosh, OTOH, is very nearly impregnable when on-line,
and if you don't do something dumb like open an E-mail attachment you
weren't expecting, you're virtually invulnerable to viruses.

So I'd tell your friend to stop worrying. A virus scanner on a Mac just
wastes computing cycles that could be put to better use. >>
