It's a new school year and here we go again! I volunteer at a local small
school that has a very mixed bag of networked Macs, all slowly going to
iMacs.

Slot load Tangerine DV model (500 MHz?) in a school classroom setting can't
get a DHCP address from the server, AppleTalk may or may not work, may or
may not boot, hangs just before the hard drive shows usually. Even with the
CD if it accepts the 'c' key which is about every other or so time. May or
may not shut down also hangs just after desktop is cleared. Can 'force
quit' the finder and things move on usually. Even with a fresh Apple only
install.
Overall slowness, pauses every so many seconds. Ran OK last school year, or
so I am told.

Items done already:
- Have moved it to a known good connection cable set.
- Have run Tech Tool Pro for hardware issues and none currently show.
- Hard drive reformatted (zeroed) and OS 9.2.1 installed
- PRAM zapped (start w/program button pressed?)

Hard drive was cleared for other reasons, and it did cause an improvement in
the problem for the starting and shut down but not completely.

Does all of this seem possible just because of a weak/dead PRAM battery?

I've not known Macs to get so temperamental for lack of a battery to this
degree. Usually the date and such and occasionally a black screen.

TIA

Ken
