Binary files on newsgroups are not really binary. They've been encoded 
using any of a number of methods that turns them into text files; the 
most common is uuencoding. Also common (on mac groups) are binhex 
("hqx"), and a few others.

Most of the time, you just need to run these files through StuffIt 
Expander. Otherwise, try dragging the file onto a media app (like 
QuickTime). Also note that, for most AVI's you'll find on USENET, 
you'll need to install a DiVX codec to see the video, and use a program 
like DiVX Doctor to hear the audio; DiVX is cool, but it's a fairly 
kluge solution that doesn't work well on many non-MS platforms.
