Most of the big-name music sites have samples, such as CDNow and 
CDUniverse, along with other obvious choices like Amazon.

These are generally very short snippets, but there are enough of them 
to get a feel for the album. When I find one that's very interesting, 
I'll go hunt down the band's website and you can usually find full 
songs (low bitrate) available there. If I'm still liking it I'll 
probably buy the CD.

Incidentally, the way I generally find these new bands in the first 
place is pretty fun: go to a site like amazon.com and look up a page 
for a band or artist you KNOW you like. Now look at what people who 
bought the artist you like ALSO bought ... follow the links and you'll 
find some interesting stuff guaranteed!
