This is a bit of a long shot, but if nothing else yet works...

Apple posted a KnowledgeBase document some time back regarding modems that
would unexpectedly drop the line (somewhat opposite of your problem).  The
solution was to choose the "v.34 modem" rather than the v.90 modem in the
modem control panel.  This solved my problem of dropped lines.  Try it and
see.
