I think you'll see that the OS X installer will not give you the 
opportunity to install on any partition outside the first 8 GB.  
Partition the first 8 GB any way you want to, but your boot system must 
reside on a partition wholly within the first 8 GB.  Said another way, 
any boot system on a partition that strays beyond the first 8 GB will 
not be recognized as a valid start-up system.
