I think  as a minimum you need to find what she was attempting to 
upgrade to. The only free path from 8.5.x is to 8.6. If she was trying 
to install a 9.x upgrade, that wouldn't work because OS 9.x is not a 
free upgrade. The minimum requirement for upgrade to an OS 9.x or 
higher is OS 9 already installed, which one has to buy.
