Hi Carolyn,  I found the following document on the AppleCare Database: 
Mac OS X: About the root user and how to enable it (article id: 106290)

I uses this info to go in and correct the privileges as necessary and 
everything works fine now.

I encourage everyone to download this article and file it away for 
future use.
