Not quite. They are withdrawing support for BOOTABLE os 9, but not for
Classic. So you'll be able to use most of your OS 9 apps for years and
years to come.

What you need is the RETAIL version of OS 9.1 or better -- updates from
9.1 to 9.2.2 are free. You need to make sure it's the retail version
and not a machine-specific version (unless it's for an iMac, that
should be ok).

Other than improving everything and making things faster and more
stable, I doubt you'll hardly even notice. OS 9.x is simply an
improvement on things from 8.6, with a few new features thrown in.
Sadly, I can't find a URL that details these new features, but I'll bet
it's in Apple's Knowledgebase somewhere.

Both are TOTALLY unnecessary nor desireable unless you have specific
reasons for doing so. When you do a "clean install" of OS 9.x, your old
8.6 folder is not deleted, just renamed (so all your fonts, prefs and
so on are preserved just fine).

You can use a nifty piece of shareware called "Clean Install Assistant"
to make this process VERY easy. Run it before you do the clean install,
then run it again afterwards. You'll be amazed.

If you haven't already done so and have this program, be SURE to update
your Adobe Type Manager (regular or deluxe) to the latest version. It
would be wise to update any system utilities you have (such as Norton
or DiskWarrior) to the current version as well.

Another Florida Mac user! I was just there doing some promotional work.
Stayed at the Ybor City Hilton (fabulous hotel!). Love the trolley
cars, I'm very familiar with Ybor and Tampa in general (used to be on
WUSF quite a lot doing pledge drives) and was thrilled to see a bit of
historic Ybor brought back.

Lakeland has an excellent Mac User Group called FL-MUG II (the home
group is in Orlando). You can find out more about this by visiting
www.flmug.com.
