These are probably Mail.app users (the default Mac OS X mail program)
who haven't worked around a bug in the program (which might have been
fixed in 10.2, I don't know).

Basically, if you are using Mail and you reply to someone with any kind
of rich text or "high ASCII" in their message (even just in the SIG),
your email goes out as rich text, which includes formatting characters
that get translated into plain ASCII when it hits the list.

It may be inaccurate or unfair, but I suspect the "problem" originates
with Outlook Express/Entourage users, who routinely use HTML in their
mail without even knowing it (curse Microsoft). It is Mail's inability
to correctly handle replying to such email that causes the problem.

It's annoying. I think the way to fix that is to set the prefs in Mail
to UNCHECK the "same format as the original message" box under
"composing" (and of course you should *always* make your default
composing style "Plain Text").

BTW, I might be completely misinformed about this. Corrections
gratefully accepted.
