If you're going to work in OS 9, then 512MB is plenty. OS X can take better advantage of more memory, but for most people (average users) 512MB is good as well. The ones who need 768 or higher are those who are doing a lot of intense work (like video, Photoshop) or ones who need to keep a large number of professional-level apps open (like musicians for example). A lot of RAM can sometimes also help make up for a slower processor (like those clamshell iBooks) by making the system work in (faster) RAM more than with the disk. For the OP's 400MHZ Graphite DVD SE, I'd suggest that 512 is fine for OS 9, but 768 or 1gig would be best for OS X. _Chas_ Come to ...
