They had a regular dial-up account and I could receive mail just fine but could not send with the same error message you are getting. They were using Outlook Express and Netscape for their email. We spent a couple of hours trying to figure it out and it ended up being that we could not send at all on the Earthlink account using an Earthlink SMTP server unless we were actually connected to one of their connections. Something to do with the type of account and Earthlink protocol.
You might look at what SMTP server that the Mac Mail program is using when you send email. Very likely it is not an Earthlink one. You might try changing SMTP servers in the Eudora then to match.
