I have posted previosuly regarding problems with using USB hubs on my iMac G3/333 running System 9.0.4
I had the keyboard running on the top USB socket with the mouse slaved off the keyboard and also later put a Gravis gamepad off the other keyboard port. I then put a three port unpowered Shark USB hub off the lower USB socket and had a SanDisk card reader, a USB Iomega Zip drive and a HP 810 inkjet printer running off the hub. I needed another usb connector for another device and swapped the Shark hub for a D-Link hub. Powered or unpowered, the hub caused problems with the printer and computer being unable to complete other than a minimal amount of data transfer without connection errors. After much playing around, I have everything running together, but only with the following configurations: Upper USB socket - D-Link USB hub (powered) - HP810 - Sandisk Reader - Zip drive - JamCam usb cable Lower USB socket - Keyboard - mouse - Gravis gamepad Anything else, including removing the power to the USB hub, changing the socket connections around, ect. result in print failure. Also, the desktop print spooler has to be disabled, with the printing directly to the printer in foreground mode. The D-Link hub works fine on my Toshiba, the Shark hub works fine with both the Toshiba and the iMac. I'm assuming that either the iMac's ports or the D-Link hub are not spec'ed as tightly as might be desired and since one USB port on the iMac <just> works and the other doesn't, that the iMac is the weak link. Also, if the D-Link USB is powered and connected to either port, the iMac won't power up from the keyboard switch. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
