Correct. I have an older, now discontinued, N650U and it only draws 300 
ma. Runs fine. It has no provisions for an alternate power source. It's 
only a maximum 1200 dpi, but for general purpose flat bed scanning it 
works great.

Mine's on a powered hub, but only because I have several USB devices 
and it's more convenient. It works juts as well directly plugged into 
the iMac. Note: It will not work off the keyboard USB slots.
