You should get a bigger internal drive, they're cheaper than externals anyway. Western Digital and Seagate hard drives are supposed to work well with Macs. 80 and 100 GB ATA/IDE internal drives sell for $100-$120 at good discount places. Look it up through the lowendmac.com vendors. Better yet, check out local stores like compusa, or best buy. They sometimes have weekly specials with drastic markdowns. I bought a Seagate 80GB 7200rpm for $60 after rebates. I did the install myself on my 333MHz (including issues involving partitioning the hard drive on 233/266/333MHz iMacs with OS X) with instruction from AccelerateYourMac!'s searchable database: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
Do you really need Jaguar or can you get by with 9.2? Jaguar is a memory-hungry operating system, so from what I hear you should need at least 256MB of RAM to use it effectively. Even then it's still pokey on the old iMacs. --Jeff In a message dated 1/23/03 4:26:47 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > My rule of thumb is that if I'm down to my last 10% of the drive, it's > time to buy an additional drive OR start archiving stuff. :) > > There's a lot of factors at work to determine, but I've found that > keeping at least a gig of space free will prevent any serious problems > with temp files and so on. > > _Chas_ Wow. I just bought Jaguar and put it on my little iMac, with the 6 gig drive. That sure don't leave much space left over for anything else! 2 gigs just for the OS, a gig free. Clearly Jag isn't intended for older machines. So should I be looking for some kind of external drive? Not having firewire, seems like that would be pretty slow. Hmm. Any suggestions? I have never looked into external drives. -- >> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
