Thanks to all who responded to educate me regarding music sites. I'm not certain that my initial post indicated that I'm proposing to let my daughter steal copyrighted material - but if that is the impression, it was not the intent.
I'd hope that my posts do not reflect a guilty-until-proven-innocent attitude towards others on the list. I've spent over 50 years of my life (yeah, I'm old) writing, directing, and producing plays and later, films and video. (Did my first produced play at age 6, first film age 12) I've commissioned music from quite a few composers and employed quite a few musicians as well as collaborating as a lyricist, so I have a pretty decent track record of honoring the rights of artists, and raising money to pay them. I'm hoping my daughter develops similar respect for her favored musicians. I have had musicians send me MP3s and CDs offering me the use of their creations for free and I've downloaded MP3 files from specific collaborators, but as far as getting pop music, free or paid, off the web, I'm afraid I have to plead ignorance. Which is why I wrote, of course. I do tend to think that the entire music industry copyright/royalty system is not only out of whack with contemporary life, but also somewhat of a rip off to musicians and composers. Anyone familiar with ASCAP or BMI practices knows that they rarely compensate the vast array of artists who get radio play, but rather use a formula that rewards the big labels and their contracted artists. Most of the money paid for recorded music never gets to the artists. Some musicians seem to be taking advantage of the internet technology to directly market and sell. Thanks again for the help.
