Not necessarily as perfect as one might think. During the boom- boom 
height of Napster's popularity, CD sales were at all- time highs and 
continually breaking records (no pun intended.) Suddenly, when RIAA et 
al. started their push to stop Napster, CD sales began to slide. The 
further they pushed, the farther they slid. It might not be a cause and 
effect relationship, though. The US economy also started to slide at 
about the same time. However, I don't rule it out by any means. It's 
perfectly plausible to me that by sampling new records, being 
frustrated by slow d/l times, inferior recordings, etc., that many 
consumers may have been exposed to songs they otherwise wouldn't have 
and were thus compelled to buy the CD. With court ruling making it more 
difficult, maybe that's what's causing the slowdown of sales. Who knows 
for certain?
