Previous versions of OS X run like Molasses in January. The tricky part on the Rev. A-D iMacs is you have to keep both OS's within the first physical 8 Gigs of the drive. If you haven't installed a lot yet, you might want to consider partitioning the drive first, ensuring that all parts of the OS stay within the first 8 Gig. (I recently did a software update, and it put all the new stuff outside the first 8 gig, and caused all kinds of problems. I ended up partitioning the drive and reinstalling everything.) As far as browsers go, it seems to be a matter of personal preference, and I'm sure that others will suggest a plethora of options. We just had a big debate on this list about browsers recently, so I won't go into it here. Try several, and pick the one that works best for *you*.
