On my older machines like the PowerMac 7200 and my Powerbook 150, Apple
sent me mail. not eMail, but real life, honest to goodness, hold it in
your hands Mail to remind me about AppleCare.
Now I don't get anything. So I guess its up to you to remember when
your year is up.

I didn't use to buy the extended warranties but since my daughter's
iBook 500, I have.
Just think of what it would cost to work on an iBook.

look at it this way:

replace LCD screen:hundreds of dollars
replace motherboard:hundreds of dollars
anything else; at least a hundred
Applecare for iBook:$249 (or $209 at Small Dog Electronics)

Peace of mind knowing its covered : PRICELESS
