Actually, while you're correct so far about the limitations of most machines you list, the most recent iBooks do spanning quite nicely with Klaus' <http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html> hack. In that case, the limitation is software based and can be overcome or reverted very easily in Open Firmware. It works perfectly on my 12" iBook 800 combo/Jag with a 17" Sony Trinitron. It was one of the reasons I went ahead and bought the iBook instead of the PB- I really need spanning- which saved me at least USD 500.
