Mirroring is what iMacs do- simply show an exact copy of the screen on
an external monitor- handy for showing, movies, presentations, etc. on
a larger monitor. Spanning is using an external monitor as an
continuation of your present screen- this is useful for many reasons-
having 2 whole, open documents open, side- by - side, or having an
image open on the main screen and having toolbars and palettes open in
the other, etc.

Typically Apple doesn't allow spanning on consumer models, but only on
professional models. The OF hack we discussed was devised by a very
clever guy <http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html> (the
page is back up, BTW) who found a way to enable spanning on the most
recent (those with Radeon Mobility 7500 and 32 MB VRAM) iBooks and
actually, which I forgot to mention before, the 17" iMacs. So spanning
*is* possible on at least one iMac model.

I did it on my iBook and it works fantastic, but changing OF settings
probably isn't for the faint of heart and could possibly render your
machine inoperable.
