Amber,
Do you leave your iMac on overnight, or do you turn it off when not using
it? There are hidden log files that OS X creates and then cleans up through
automatically-scheduled chron jobs that run at night. If you shut it down
overnight these files can accumulate and get pretty large. I had one in the
1.5 MB range before I noticed what was happening. So Jacques' suggestion
of checking for large hidden files is one way to deal with this. A good
tool for doing that is SNAX. Another way to deal with it is to use
MacJanitor, which cleans up those files when you tell it to. Or, simplest
thing, just leave your iMac on overnight and see if you've regained some HD
space by morning. I think some of the chron jobs are nightly, some weekly,
and some monthly. But even after just one night, you should see some
improvement if this is the problem. Of course, if you already leave your
iMac on overnight, ignore everything I've said. Your problem would be due
to something else. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Hi Amber,
would do a find on trash folders and look for hidden directories and
contents.
It I had "lost" 2GB - hiding in a trash subfolder in swap.
Also, Is there a possibility a partition did not mount?
