Thats not the way you want to do that, if you could get it to work
you'd be limited to the speed of the modem anyways... defeating the
purpose of hooking it to cable.

Get a LinkSys Etherfast Cable / DSL Router. They are available most
places.. got mine at Staples for 90 something. They also work as
ethernet routers as well so you will be setting up an ethernet network
at the same time.

Then the cable modem goes into the end port and you have the rest of
the ports to hook up other computers. Just make sure you don't use the
port that says uplink, because that one is for hooking another router
up to to get more ports.

LinkSys doesn't support Macs but they work just fine. It took me a
couple hours to figure out how to set mine up, comparing the various
incarnations of windows instructions to what I had on my mac. I've
used it to share DSL between a 7200 and iMac for a couple years now.
The platform hooked up doesn't matter since it is set up using a web
page it has built into it.

To save you some headache here are the basic things you have to do to
set one up for a mac.

Hook cable modem to router

Hook up both macs to router with ethernet cable.

For OSX go to System Preference:Network.
Make sure the Show: is set to Built-in Ethernet
Make sure the TCP/IP is set to Using DHCP
For OS 9 go to Control Panels:TCP/IP
Make sure Connect via Ethernet is selected
           and connect via DHCP Server

Use your browser of choice to go to the web address that is says in the
instructions.

WAN IP Address: Make sure the Obtain an IP Address Automatically
button is pushed.

Below that you will see Subnet Mask: type in 255 255 255 0 there

Next is the Login: Here you will click the PPPoE button and below put
in the user name and password and speed of your connection. That info
should be on the info from your provider

This way you will share the cable modem's speed plus by turning
appletalk to ethernet you have a network as well.
