Nothing. It's certainly possible, and works for many people. The OS
will find whatever component it is looking for to perform the function
you requested, regardless of where it's located.

The latest Jaguar CD's only include a version of 9 for classic. That
doesn't mean you cannot also load 9.2 on from it's own CD. Even if you
put a full version of 9 on, partitioning is strictly your choice. The
start up disk panel will find and boot from your chosen system even if
they are all on one partition.

My youngest still has some older software than runs better under actual
9 than classic, so she has 9.2.2, 10.2.4 and Classic all happily
coexisting on one 40 GB drive on her iMac.

My old, but loyal PTP upgrade, to a G3/400 has 9.1 & 10.2.4 each on
separate HD. A different proposition than partitioning, although it
also has another HD with 4 partitions for filing purposes.

My MDD Dual 867 has 9.2.2, 10.2.4 and classic all on one drive just as
Apple shipped it.

Bottom line partitioning is a matter of choice. Except for some earlier
SCSI equipped units where OS X wants to be on a 8 GB or smaller
partition. It is entirely up to you. You can make good arguments for
either choice.

No "right or wrong" here. Just personal choice.
