Yes there is. It's called "return-receipt-requested." Doesn't work with all email programs, but does work with the popular ones for the Mac and PC (Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express). However, it's pretty damn annoying and is a good way to get people to dread your emails in a hurry, because they must manually acknowledge that they got (and ergo must have read) the email. Very few people like this sort of behaviour and equate it to spam, so I'd recommend not doing it. It's fine for, say, Very Important Announcements that you want to sent to a select group of people, or perhaps some sensitive info you want to make sure the intended party has read. But for the most part, it's not a good idea. Generally speaking, if you don't get a bounce message, then your email arrived at the intended person's inbox. As for whether it's read or deleted, that's up to them. The only way you can really tell is if you put an HTML pointer in your email (bad idea #1) that pulls a graphic from your server to load (bad idea #2) and in doing so reveals the recipient's IP address to you (bad idea #3, you're out). This method would again make you no better than a spammer and about as beloved. _Chas_ Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are inferior to McDonald's. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
