Adding to (or contradicting) the replies you have receievd so far: > If I could find a dead Rev B, C, or D iMac > could I use the processor daughter card > from them (266-400Mhz) in my Rev A (assuming > that the card was still good of course)?
Absolutely. I'm running a 333 MHz processor in my original Bondi right now. If you get a 266 card, make sure you apply the iMac Firmware Update to it after you install the card, even if it was installed with the original 233 MHz card installed. If the iMac doesn't need it, the software will tell you so. (I tried running the upgrade when I installed my 333 MHz card, but the software said the upgrade was not needed, but it WAS needed when I installed a used 233 MHz card a few months ago.) The 333 MHz CPU card I got off ebay was around $75. > I seem to remember processor upgrades being > available when the Rev A iMacs were on the > market. 350Mhz G-3 or their about. Where > could I look to locate one of these at a > reasonable price? Sonnet's Harmoni adds a 500 or 600 MHz processor with Firewire. Cost is around $300-400. I have no personal experience with them, but the reports I read at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com seem to indicate they run fine. PowerLogix' iForce adds a G4 (400 or 500 MHz, IIRC). I have a iForce G3 400 MHz (older model) that started having cache problems after a year - PowerLogix said it was ok, and that it was a RAM problem (I sent it back under warranty and they "tested" it). Right. :-P I installed it again and the iMac either wouldn't boot, or would boot and run for less than a minute before locking up. I reinstalled the original 233 MHz card with the same RAM and it ran like a top (until I bought the 333 MHz card and installed that). Lots of folks have had problems with other G3 upgrades from PowerLogix (see the report at http:/www.macintouch.com). I'd personally avoid PowerLogix. Both companies sell through their web sites, and also list retailers who sell their products. > Many of the packages are listing 266Mhz or > 300Mhz as the minimum. Many times, the spec is based on the slowest machine the software was tested on. It may work fine. I would, however, pay particular attention to the Video Processor requirement. You can't get around the limited video processor in the original iMac. While you're upgrading the CPU and RAM make sure you have the full 6 MB of video RAM installed. Another note: Adding extra RAM in the older iMacs can be problematic. Mine won't take more than 256 MB. Fact. Others have successfully gone to 384 and 512 MB. There appears to be no rhyme or reason why this is so. You may be one of the lucky ones. Regards, Bob Eye Dallas, TX -----Original Message----- Date: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 07:43:07 -0600 Subject: Bondi Upgrade From: Douglas Aalseth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have checked the iMac-List Archive and didn't find an answer nor have I found this anywhere on line. I just inherited an original Bondi iMac. I'm fixing it up prior to giving it to a relative that is currently working with a Mac SE. I am going to do the usual, bump the memory up, install OS9, Norton and TechTool the drive, etc. I'm a little concerned that 233Mhz is going to be too slow for the software her kids want to run. Many of the packages are listing 266Mhz or 300Mhz as the minimum. On the other hand I don't want to sink $200-$300 into a processor upgrade. Most of them are G4-466 to 500Mhz, which is way more than they are going to need, not to mention that neither they nor I have that kind of cash burning a hole in our pockets. My questions are; If I could find a dead Rev B, C, or D iMac could I use the processor daughter card from them (266-400Mhz) in my Rev A (assuming that the card was still good of course)? I seem to remember processor upgrades being available when the Rev A iMacs were on the market. 350Mhz G-3 or their about. Where could I look to locate one of these at a reasonable price? -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
