I am about to upgrade to a 17-inch flat-panel 1GHz iMac at my local Apple
store. I want to max out RAM to the full 1GB. If I do it via the Apple
store, it is going to cost substantially more than if I purchase the RAM via
a reseller. The point is that if I read the tech specs correctly, the 256MB
chip the computer comes with is to be removed first, to be replaced with a
512MB chip. According to the tech specs, that slot, however, seems not to be
'user-accessible'.

Am I correct in thinking that if I want to max out to 1GB, my only option,
as a non-tech person, is to go via the Apple people?

Thanks for any input,

Walter
