In OS X, DVD Player will be version 3.x. The easiest way to tell is to 
go to the DVD Player application and Get Info on it... the version will 
be listed there.

The DVD-ROM drive has a soft-region setting. The drive will allow you 
to change regions 5 times. After this, you are effectively locked into 
whatever region you wind up in. Some drives can be reset by various 
commands being run in Open Firmware or running certain applications - 
the method varies widely by which specific drive you have.
