i'm not aware of any viruses that would do anything like this. i would 
actually bet on directory structure errors - specifically, something 
like a PEOF error (or series of PEOF errors) or perhaps some keys out 
of order.

i would suggest picking up a copy of DiskWarrior and running that. If 
it's a PEOF error ("Physical end-of-file", kbase #16231 
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=16231>), the damage may 
already be done and the data is probably already be permanently lost. 
If it's keys out-of-order, there's the same possibility, but it's not 
as certain as PEOF.
