As to the "no-booting"...my bad! I by chance loaded the CD with OS
9.2.1 and it needs 9.2.2 to boot the iMac. I made another disk with
9.2.2 and it boots fine. However, the noises persist. Hmm, that slipping
felt pad thingy might be a culprit. I'll have to try it with other CDs
and see if they repeat the problem.
