Outlook Express is showing error -3170, but that is not a correct error
message. Actually, the traffic between cox.net and comcast.net is hitting a
brick wall. There is no error in the smtp server name.

I found out from cox.net customer support that my friend's outgoing e-mail
is hitting a brick wall set up to prevent one ISP from moving SMTP outgoing
e-mail to another ISP. To review the scenario, my friend, visiting from
Floria with his motor home, had his iMac on my desk, connected to my network
with access to cable on cox.net. He received his incoming e-mail just fine.
At home, his configuration sends his outgoing e-mail to smtp.comcast.net.
The iMac still wants to send to comcast.net, but my cox.net is in the middle
and there is a brick wall between the two ISPs. If I went to friend's house
in Florida with my Powerbook, I'd face the same problem.

The solution is to log in to the ISP's web site and proceed to use an e-mail
facility there, bypassing Outlook Express and its settings, and bypassing
any other e-mail client for that matter.

G-r-r-r! Why can't the e-mail client give us the correct info, or why won't
the ISP (cox.net in this case) send us a message telling us the right story?
