An easy mistake to make. No, that's not what they are talking about. I can totally see where you'd get that impression, though!
They mean an icon of the printer appears on your desktop so that you can "drag and drop" documents on the printer icon and they will just go directly to print without having to open them in the native app of the document (Word, Acrobat etc).
Printing the desktop sort of smacks to me of something one would do in a Windows environment, but then that's just me...
In OS 9 you could "print the desktop" as you describe. In OS X it's a two-step (but still very easy) process.
