Once that is down, close system preferences. Open mail (you do not have to be online to do this). Open the mail preferences, under accounts tab delete (click the remove button) for your current account. Then click add and set that up again. Close mail. Chose log out from the Apple menu and log off and back in again. Open internet connect and connect. Once you are seeing a valid connection, then open your mail program. You should be good to go.
This applies specifically to Apple's mail application. If you are using some other mailer, then the steps would be similar but not necessarily identical.
