My iMac is overloaded and I am getting multiple crashes and errors. Tried

What do you mean by "overloaded?"

Fsck is not the be-all and end-all of Mac troubleshooting.

I have firewire but these are obviously going to cost more. I would prefer
just to drag all my stuff over to the new hard drive before initializing to
save a lot of time.

Yes. DON'T just drag your stuff over to the new drive -- use Carbon Copy Cloner to be sure you get an EXACT copy, invisible files and all.


As for drives, I hear Maxtor's pretty good these days, as is IBM. I've been told to stay away from Western Digital, but we'll see.
