All of the major makers have digital's that will work nicely with OSX. A $300.00 price point is fine for a point and shoot digital. Personally we have Olympus and Canon cameras' of various flavors around here. Both brands, give excellent performance.
My only comment would be look at the batteries. I love that all of the Olympus models we have will work with standard AA batteries if need be. Really a nice feature for a camera that you want to use on extended trips. You won't be disappointed with anything from one of the major brands.
There are some bargains to be had. Digital camera's are super competitive right now and there is a lot of model turn over. You can often find a great deal on what was the featured product six months ago and has now been replaced by the "Latest" model. The camera that was $500.00+ last year, may now be had new, for 1/2 the price because it has been replaced by a "New" model". For snap shot type use, anything from 1.5 megapixels up will give you nice pictures.

p.s. Allow the funds for a larger HD. Digital camera's are insidious. They make taking pictures so much fun, you'll have a huge library before you know it. :-)
