Yes do that, 9.2.x works on any G3 and up, who told you it doesn't? On the subject, some one else pointed out that if you put in another HD which is bigger than 8 GB you have to partition the HD with a partition smaller than 8GB, say 7.8GB, than install OS 9.x on that partition. And make sure the HD is jumpered as master except for the new Western Digital JB and BB ones, they seem to require to pull every jumper on it, at least that's from what I heard from G4 users. Also see if you can update the firmware if that hasn't been done that, but uhm you have to be booted off the HD to complete the update so that won't work.
