Sorry for the delay in responding, as I'm subscribed to the list in digest mode.
Thanks to all who chimed in on my query about using an external fan to help with the cooling of the convection-cooled iMacs. Anonymous Prime's claim that a USB-powered fan would increase the work for the iMac's power supply can be easily solved by plugging it into a powered USB hub instead of the iMac directly. However, Prime's comment about pulling hot air out rather than blow cool air in makes a lot of sense, especially considering that blowing air in would also increase the likelihood of blowing in dust and other contaminants. As for putting a regular table fan on my desk--well, that's just not an option due to the regular mess of papers surrounding my workspace (I'm a writer and a univ. prof---I'm drowning in paper). And, thanks to those who responded, I now know to clamp that USB-powered fan on the top handle of the iMac to help draw that hot air out. At $5 bucks, it's a cheap experiment. I'll report to the list the results. The knowledge and responsiveness of this list continue to amaze me. Thanks! MWS -- Matthew W.
