The user agent is sent as part of every request. More like:
browser: "I'm Safari on Mac OS X...I want index.html"
server: "Sorry, here's an error page"
Most likely the web designers are trying to prevent people from accessing
their pages with browsers that can not handel some of their content (online
bank example wants a browser capable of required security) and simply
haven't added Safari to the list of browsers that know what to do (advanced
CSS often crashes Netscape 4 - and an error page is much nicer than a crash
for those users). Try to avoid changing the user agent you send with
requests, as the server logs often track which browsers are requesting pages
and you wouldn't want your browser to be under represented.
