I need to create and maintain a few web sites. Son #1 did this for me in
the past, but he is beginning to be too busy to do updates whenever I need
him to do so. He has DreamWeaver MX on a PC, so I need to find my own
software.

Could I hear some of your recommendations for appropriate software?

Given your description of the requirements, I'd suggest you investigate Freeway by Softpress (www.softpress.com, about $90 on up to $300 depending on your needs) for the more complex work, and Netscape/Mozilla Composer (free, included with Netscape 7.1 or Mozilla 1.4 -- I recommend the latter) for basic type sites. I'd also suggest that you avail yourself of the wealth of web resources and good books to teach yourself at least a smattering of basic HTML (and possibly CSS and XHMTL if you feel comfortable with it).

I personally find Dreamweaver far too complex for most site needs, GoLive is better but still too expensive. There are other tools, but so far Freeway has come the closest to the goal of being "easy yet powerful and not too expensive." There is a free 30-day trial I believe, and a helpful series of Quicktime/Flash tutorials to help.

The current
incarnation of this organization's web site has such a form, which opens
nicely on a PC but is skewed almost beyond recognition when I bring it up on
my iMac. (Incidentally, the current web site was created about two years
ago on unknown software.)

Sounds like MS Word-created HTML ... or maybe FrontPage. Bleah to them both.

By using STANDARDS, it's easy to create a form that will render correctly on all platforms. Of course Microsoft wouldn't know a real standard if it pranced around like a sweaty howler monkey screaming "developers!" (obscure joke).
