the blinking question mark means that there is no valid operating system on the drive. Either the one that is there is too corrupt to be used, (most likely scenario) or difficult to read. (like bad hard drive) You said you had lot of freezes, etc leading up to this point. My suggestion, slip in the cd rom with a first aid application and see if the app can fix it, if not. You will need to do a fresh install of the OS. Painful, but will take care of most of your other problems as well.
