You may have just proved my point. Steve Jobs seems to be marginalizing his
consumer base. Perhaps Apple is no longer interested in the little guy. I
think it's a stupid move.
I think people overreact when Steve does events for specific market places. I don't consider it 'marginalizing' the market place at all, I see it as paying attention to the specific needs of each group. Individual attention grows faith and understanding. It also allows you to develop products for that market place that do the job right, rather than just trying to be a jack-of-all-trades.
"The little guy" (that generally includes me) continues to get great products like the iMac, eMac (although I personally don't think they are very good but they are cheap which is the important thing), iBook and cool accessories like iPod and iSight.
Apple is an established force in a good many professional areas, where PCs barely get a foot hold, particularly studio music and DTP. They are also trying to break into other areas, such as server technology. They have to give attention to these places or the corporations that spend the money lose interest.
Which leads me to Don's remark:
MacWorld is rarely attended by those who might be converts but usually by the faithful.
Why then did Apple spend millions of dollars on a recent ad campaign that
featured PC users converting to Apple Macintosh? If you don't put the
fannies in the seats, you're not going to sell the product.
As someone who booked a Keynote ticket for Paris in March I have to say I agree that Mac conferences are less likely to be attended by people planning to convert, they are more likely to go to their local Apple Store, or Apple retailer to get information, which is why Apple has so many of those, and has made a concerted drive onto the high street in the last 3 years. I'm just hoping they have plans to expand the network into Europe.
